What are advantages of overlay welding wear plate


Overlay welding wear plate is type of new wear resistant alloy which has been widely used in the complex conditions in industry. The welding layer contents with 4 to 5 percent of Carbon element and 25 to 30 percent of Chromium. In its metallographic structure, the Cr7C3 accounts for half of the total volume fraction, which micro hardness of the total plate among HRC56-63, Cr7C3 hardness among HV1400-1800. Following is the advantages the Chromium carbide overlay welding plate outperforms other mental materials. 

i. 20 to 25 times the wear resistance of low carbon steel; 5 to 10 times of high manganese steel; 5 to 10 times of tool steel; 1.5 to 2 times of high chrome cast.
ii. The welding layer provides high wear resistance of the whole plate, meanwhile the base layer back support against high impact.
iii. Normally the overlay welding plate can be used in condition below 600C. In special case, it’s able to withstand 800C when added by other elements such as Mo. However, normal carbon steel base welding plate is able to work in temperature less than 480C. Low content alloy base welding plate able to work in temperature less than 540C, example 15CrMo base plate. 
iv. The overlay welding plate has high content of Chromium, to some extent it’s corrosion resistant.

In conclusion, the high chrome overlay welding wear plate are very cost-effective compared to other materials in terms of lifetime, wear resistance, impact resistance, heat resistance and corrosion resistance as well.


The overlay welding plate is always processed by plasma automatic welding, laser automatic welding and traditional carbon dioxide gas arc welding. The two formers generate higher wear resistance but come with higher cost. The gas arc welding is more widely used due to lower operation cost and spare parts of equipment.
